3...2...1 LAUNCH! Second grade students in Mrs. Kathy Self’s classroom are finishing an engineering unit centered around constructing launchers and problem solving variables that impact force, distance and durability. As an extension of the classroom instruction and exploration time, the students visited the Maker Studio. During this time, integration of digital technology was introduced using the Dash robot and the launcher attachment. Two class periods engaged students in problem solving why the launcher would not work, identifying the problem. They generated solutions and finally successful launched the ping pong ball with the “correctly” installed launcher. Visible thinking and collaboration extended the students learning and created a powerful learning experience.
