Electric .... is a great way to describe the use of literature in the area of science at TCES. Fourth grade teachers used the timing of the holidays, the reading of City of Ember and the AMSTI kit on electricity to engage students in their learning. Vocabulary, technology, problem solving and discovery played a role in the unit developed using Science, Technology, Engineering, ART and Math. Students practiced critical literacy skills alongside exploring with electric circuits, types of energy, advancements with light and created a visual representation using map and math skills. Not only were students engaged with the unit and its ties to the literature but teachers also integrated the art of MAkING during their holiday parties. Students created wearable circuit jewelry, light up reindeer and make holiday representations using "squishy circuits" as a way to apply their learning.
